A Day in the Life as Head of School

Never a Typical School Day

On a recent morning, Swopes was in a classroom when two 5-year-olds began pushing each other. She sat them down and made them talk out their problem.  And when another 5-year-old told her she didn’t have gloves to wear outside for recess, Swopes handed over an extra pair she keeps on hand.

All day, Swopes weaves in and out of classrooms, assisting teachers, pitching in on lessons, getting the children bundled up for recess or serving food in the cafeteria.

“We all do many different jobs here,” she said. “That’s the only way we can keep it running.”

Lions Academy has about 150 pupils, many of them African-American, Asian and Latino, and offers pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes.

To start her school, Swopes left a job as a scientific and administrative manager at Abbott Laboratories.  She had held several positions in her 17 years at Abbott. But as she advanced in the sciences, she noticed there weren’t many other African-Americans in her field and wanted to change that.

“I always wanted to come back and do something for people in the community,” she said.

As a child, Swopes said, she was always intrigued by lab coats, glass beakers and discovering new things.  In college, she specialized in the sciences and got degrees in pre-medicine and microbiology and a doctorate in microbiology specializing in immunochemistry.

She eventually wants the school to teach 1st through 12th grades.  But mainly she’s hoping that by fulfilling her dream and helping others, she will motivate others to do the same.

“I stepped out on faith to start this program,” she said. “When we are educated, we must give back. We must help our communities with our gifts.”

Our Founder & head of school

“I realized that the passion for math and science starts early.  I was disappointed with how math and sciences were often presented in a way that’s intimidating. I wanted to present it in a fun way so the children would be more comfortable with it.”
